AstraZeneca Canada donating 200,000 face masks to support Canadian healthcare workers in the fight against COVID-19

AstraZeneca Canada is donating 200,000 surgical face masks to support Canadian healthcare workers on the front line as they respond to the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic. Donated in response to the federal government’s request for additional personal protective equipment (PPE), the masks have been shipped to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to be distributed to areas with the greatest need.

“Access to personal protective equipment is one of the most pressing needs facing Canadian healthcare workers who are on the front lines caring for patients and battling this pandemic,” said Jane Chung, President of AstraZeneca Canada. “Our donation of 200,000 face masks to the Public Health Agency of Canada will help keep healthcare professionals safe while they tirelessly and courageously continue to deliver exceptional care to Canadians.”

AstraZeneca Canada recently partnered with Innovative Medicines Canada and other biopharmaceutical member companies to donate 105,000 N95 masks to PHAC. To help address the many challenges presented by COVID-19 – including the health, economic, and social impacts of the pandemic – the company has also made donations to the Canadian Red Cross and Food Banks Canada, assisting their efforts to care for and support those most vulnerable in communities across Canada.

Globally, through our scientific expertise in infectious disease and proprietary antibody discovery technology, AstraZeneca’s Research and Development teams have been working quickly to identify monoclonal antibodies to progress towards clinical trial evaluation as a treatment to prevent COVID-19. Led by our Canadian Global Clinical Hub, the company also recently started a new clinical trial evaluating how one of our existing medicines might help alleviate the exaggerated immune response that can result in pneumonia, respiratory failure and death of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infections.
