Migraine
Migraine is a common neurological disease, which affects more than three million Canadians. It is more common in females than in males.
A migraine is a type of headache that usually happens in episodes or attacks. An attack could last anywhere between 4 to 72 hours. The pain can be described as throbbing or pulsating and usually localized to one side of the head.
Migraines can occur with or without an aura. An aura can last up to one hour and is a forewarning sensation such as nausea, vomiting, or vision changes preceding the migraine attack.
Migraines can be triggered by foods such as chocolate, bright lights, loud noises, strong smells, stress, and hormonal changes during menstruation, as well as weather changes.
The pain of a migraine headache may be moderate to severe and can disrupt normal activity. However, the impact of a migraine can be minimized by the use of medication in consultation with a physician.
