A Leader in Canadian Pharmaceuticals
AstraZeneca is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. As a research-oriented company, we believe that curiosity is the best way to express our commitment to the health of
Canadians. Looking beyond the obvious and solving problems in innovative ways drives the researchers we support and our scientists toward the discovery of new and better treatments for medical conditions and diseases.
Today, our innovative and extensive product portfolio spans six therapeutic areas: cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, oncology,
respiratory, neuroscience
and infection.
Our employees
We employ more than 66,000 people in over 100 countries. Most of our 1,050 Canadian employees work at our high-tech facility in Mississauga, Ontario, headquarters for
clinical research, corporate affairs, sales and marketing, while over 120 scientists work at our state-of-the-art pain research
centre in Montréal, AstraZeneca Research & Development Montréal.
Research and development (R&D)
R&D is the foundation of our success in bringing new products to market. Highly-skilled Canadian scientists are part of a global team that works toward the discovery and design of novel and effective pharmaceutical agents and technologies. Worldwide, we spend
approximately US$3.5 billion annually.
In Canada, we invest over CDN$2
million each and every week on research initiatives. Some 13,000 R&D
personnel are employed at our research centres located in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden,
France, India and Japan.
Since its opening in 1997, our leading-edge basic research centre in pain treatment has filed patents on new discoveries that will improve people's lives. The
AZRDM is a
cornerstone of the company's vision to become the global leader in the overall therapeutic area of pain control.
